Merck and Siemens Strengthen Partnership for Smart Manufacturing

Merck and Siemens have strengthened their collaboration with a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing smart manufacturing (Smartfacturing) technologies. Signed by Siemens' CEO Cedrik Neike and Merck's CEO Kai Beckmann, the MoU designates Siemens as Merck’s preferred global supplier and strategic partner for Smartfacturing. This partnership leverages Siemens' Xcelerator platform to accelerate Merck's digital transformation and streamline modular production processes, which reduce time-to-market, costs, and CO2 emissions.

The cooperation will drive innovation across Merck's three business sectors: Healthcare, Life Sciences, and Electronics. The companies aim to transition from traditional mass production to modular, flexible processes through plug-and-play principles. This approach enhances operational flexibility and sustainability, helping Merck bring products to market faster while maintaining high safety and quality standards.

Both companies have a long history of collaboration, spanning over 145 years. A recent highlight of their joint efforts includes Merck’s modular manufacturing line for pharmaceutical and chemical production, which is based on the Module Type Package (MTP) automation standard. This system enhances product quality, safety, and compliance while enabling seamless integration with various manufacturing industries. The ongoing partnership will continue setting global standards in smart manufacturing.
