England has introduced a set of 7 priorities aimed at implementing short-term objectives in the healthcare system. These priorities, disclosed with minimal consultation, are intended to be rapidly deployed before the upcoming General Election in 2024.
The first priority, Smart System Control, involves the implementation of ICS-level dashboards to enhance capacity management and care planning. The second priority focuses on Electronic Bed and Capacity Management (EBCM) for real-time data on bed status and patient flow.
The third priority emphasises Digitised Records and Workflow, aiming to improve productivity and safety through Electronic Patient Records (EPR). Optimising Waiting Lists, Dynamic Discharge, AI diagnostic support, and the Patient Portals App Programme are the remaining priorities.
However, critics argue that the national approach fails to address frontline challenges and neglects engagement with healthcare professionals. They advocate for a more nuanced approach, acknowledging that technology is not always the sole solution to healthcare issues.
