Novo Nordisk and AWS Expand AI Partnership with London Drug Discovery Hub

Novo Nordisk and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are expanding their collaboration with a new AI co-innovation hub in London designed to support drug discovery. The initiative will bring AWS engineers, AI specialists and applied scientists together with Novo Nordisk’s research and development teams.

Under the expanded partnership, AWS will become Novo Nordisk’s preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner for drug discovery. AWS will also support the pharmaceutical company as it modernizes its technology infrastructure and applies AI across research workflows.

Novo Nordisk plans to use Amazon Bio Discovery and Amazon Bedrock to analyze genomic, imaging and clinical data. The companies aim to use these capabilities to identify potential drug targets, accelerate therapy development and apply insights from early-stage research to clinical trial design. Novo Nordisk will also deploy Amazon Bedrock AgentCore to introduce AI agents intended to automate workflows and improve operational efficiency.

"This partnership is an exciting opportunity to tackle challenges across the drug discovery process with agentic AI," said Dan Sheeran, vice president and general manager of Healthcare and Life Sciences at AWS.

The collaboration builds on Novo Nordisk’s broader adoption of AI. In April, the company announced a partnership with OpenAI to deploy AI capabilities across its global operations, including drug discovery. The initiative covers analysis of complex datasets and identification of drug candidates, alongside workforce AI literacy, manufacturing, corporate operations and supply chain activities.

AI infrastructure and co-innovation models are also gaining traction elsewhere in life sciences. Eli Lilly announced plans in January to establish an AI co-innovation laboratory with NVIDIA in San Francisco, bringing together pharmaceutical researchers and AI specialists.

Bristol Myers Squibb has similarly expanded its AI strategy. In July, the company announced plans with NVIDIA to deploy DGX SuperPOD infrastructure for high-performance AI training and inference supporting scientific and computational teams. Earlier, Bristol Myers Squibb reached an agreement with Anthropic to deploy Claude across research, manufacturing, clinical development, corporate and commercial functions, including work to identify and optimize drug targets across multiple therapeutic areas.
