Olympus-Backed MaxQ Medical Raises $31.5M to Advance Prostate Care Platform

MaxQ Medical has raised $31.5 million in Series A funding to advance its prostate care platform, which combines ultrasound imaging and targeted therapy within a single transurethral procedure. The financing was led by Olympus Innovation Ventures, Atlantic Blue Ventures and S3 Ventures, with participation from existing investor Hillside Capital. The company plans to use the funding to expand its team and advance ongoing clinical programs evaluating the technology.

The platform's initial focus is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, a common condition affecting an estimated 40 million men in the U.S. MaxQ's system is designed to give urologists detailed visualization inside the prostate while simultaneously allowing them to selectively treat targeted tissue. By combining imaging and therapy, the company aims to overcome some of the anatomical limitations associated with treatments performed from outside the prostate.

MaxQ is positioning the technology as an alternative to both traditional surgery and existing minimally invasive procedures. Transurethral resection of the prostate remains a longstanding surgical treatment for BPH but involves removing excess prostate tissue, while newer minimally invasive approaches use techniques such as water vapor to reduce tissue volume. MaxQ says its platform is designed to preserve the urethra and minimize complications including bleeding, swelling, tissue injury and effects on sexual function while providing more durable treatment.

The company plans to use the new capital to continue clinical evaluations and move the platform closer to commercialization. Beyond BPH, MaxQ intends to expand the technology into focal therapy for prostate cancer, where physicians could potentially identify and selectively treat tumors while preserving surrounding tissue.

Longer term, MaxQ sees opportunities to extend the platform into prostate diagnostics, including biopsy and tumor mapping. The funding reflects continued investment in technologies that combine advanced imaging with minimally invasive treatment to provide more precise and personalized approaches to prostate disease.
