Providence, Microsoft apply generative AI to cancer care

Providence, based in Renton, Wash., collaborates with Microsoft to leverage artificial intelligence for analysing extensive patient data, enhancing cancer care. Microsoft's Generative AI synthesises unstructured data from various sources like test results, imaging, and Electronic Health Records (EHRs) into a comprehensible text format, easing the workload for oncologists.

Dr. Rom Leidner, a medical oncologist at Providence, acknowledges the potential of AI in streamlining information management during patient consultations, foreseeing it as a transformative technology in next-generation medical science. The AI system drastically reduces the time spent by physicians in accessing and organising patient information, previously involving manual efforts like opening multiple files.

This technology not only improves efficiency during appointments but also aids Providence's genomics program by facilitating patient matching with clinical trials, thereby advancing precision cancer care across its 51-hospital network.
