Sword Health and Greek Government Launch National AI-Driven Healthcare Access Initiative

The Greek Government and Sword Health have entered into a national partnership to develop one of Europe’s first AI-powered front doors to healthcare, intended to serve more than 10 million citizens across Greece. By embedding artificial intelligence into the country’s health access infrastructure, the initiative is designed to strengthen frontline services, improve system responsiveness, and create a more resilient national healthcare model.

The collaboration will initially focus on the new National Health Information Line (1566), which functions as a key first point of contact for citizens seeking guidance on navigating care. AI will be integrated into triage and coordination workflows, with the objective of expanding capacity, standardizing support, and improving response times, while helping the system manage sudden surges in demand more effectively.

The technology is built to work alongside human professionals, rather than replace them, by taking on routine and high-volume tasks. This configuration aims to absorb fluctuations in demand, direct citizens more efficiently to the appropriate services, and allow staff to focus on more complex needs. In doing so, Greece is laying the groundwork for a broader AI-enabled health system that can shorten wait times, reduce pressure on hospitals, and give policymakers real-time visibility into emerging trends and service gaps.

This transformation is being led by Sword Intelligence, the AI Care Management division of Sword Health, which was created to support governments and health organizations in scaling operations and managing patient interactions. Having demonstrated its impact within Sword Health’s own care operations, this initiative marks its first national-level deployment.

“This is a bold and visionary step for the Greek government and for Europe,” said Virgilio Bento, founder and CEO of Sword Health. “By combining AI's transformative power with human empathy, Greece is pioneering a new model of care that expands access, relieves pressure on providers, and demonstrates how technology can truly serve humanity.”

Recognizing the particular challenge of delivering consistent care across hundreds of rural and island communities, Greece has sought partners that can support both scale and reliability. “We believe Sword Health can help us rise to this challenge,” said Adonis Georgiadis, Greece’s Minister of Health. “This partnership will rebuild how care flows through our system, making it faster, clearer, and more centred on people.”

To ensure safety, quality, and public confidence, the initiative will be independently monitored and evaluated. The Ministry of Health has requested that national and international organizations collaborate on an implementation research study to assess the system’s design and performance against international standards.

Through this collaboration, Greece is positioning itself as a potential European reference point for how governments can deploy AI to build healthcare systems that are more resilient, responsive, and human-centred.
