UK Healthcare Tech Leader Cera Secures $150M to Expand AI-Driven Home Care Services

Cera, a leading UK-based technology-enabled healthcare provider, has secured $150 million in a combined debt and equity funding round, led by BDT & MSD Partners and Schroders Capital. This investment comes as the company strengthens its position in addressing the growing challenges faced by public healthcare systems, particularly in managing aging populations.

The company's AI-driven platform, which utilizes aspects of Google's Gemini AI and Microsoft's ChatGPT, has demonstrated impressive results in preventive care. Through analysis of unstructured data collected by caregivers, Cera's predictive modelling has achieved up to 70% reduction in hospitalizations and a 20% decrease in patient falls. The system can predict over 80% of falls and 83% of hospitalizations a week before they occur.

"We're taking pressure off the NHS and supporting it to have more capacity to look after other patients," said Dr. Ben Maruthappu MBE, founder & CEO of Cera. "We've also expanded into other service lines such as nursing services, physiotherapy, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and providing mental health services in the home as well. So we're a much more comprehensive health care at home provider."

The company has shown significant financial progress, achieving EBITA-positive status in 2023 and becoming free-cashflow positive in 2024. This financial stability has enabled the primarily debt-based funding round, marking a shift toward becoming a self-sustaining business. Rob Platek, partner and global head of credit at BDT & MSD, noted, "Cera has achieved strong growth through a demonstrated ability to leverage technology to deliver exceptional care. We believe Cera is well-positioned to further scale its business."

Currently, Cera operates as the UK's largest HealthTech company, serving approximately 30 million people through 10,000 caregivers and nurses. The company collaborates with over 150 local governments and two-thirds of NHS Integrated Care Systems. According to an independent analysis by a UK consultancy company, Cera's AI-led home healthcare model generates daily savings of £1 million for the UK healthcare system.

This latest funding brings Cera's total raised capital to more than $407 million, positioning it alongside international competitors like US-based Honor, which has raised $625 million to date.
