ŌURA and UC San Diego Health Launch Clinical Trial Examining GLP-1 Treatment Outcomes

ŌURA has announced the launch of SMART-BMI, its first clinical trial, in collaboration with UC San Diego Health. The multi-year study will investigate how physiological measurements collected through Oura Ring relate to clinical outcomes among patients receiving GLP-1 medications or undergoing bariatric surgery.

The trial aims to address gaps in understanding patients' physiological changes between clinical appointments. Researchers will examine associations between sleep, heart rate, physical activity, and treatment outcomes, including weight loss, HbA1c levels, and treatment persistence. The study is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov under NCT07736729.

“Longitudinal and surgical management of obesity can unlock the power of continuous monitoring and precision medicine offered by wearables,” said Jeff Reeves, MD, of UC San Diego Health.

SMART-BMI forms part of ŌURA's expanding clinical research activities, coordinated through its Office of Regulatory and Clinical Affairs (ORCA), established under Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ricky Bloomfield.

ORCA integrates scientific validation, regulatory compliance, outcomes research, and clinical informatics to evaluate how wearable measurements can support healthcare applications. Its responsibilities include assessing AI-powered health features, maintaining regulatory standards, and investigating relationships between continuous biometric data and clinical outcomes.

ŌURA's broader research portfolio includes collaborations with Maven Clinic and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Its study with Maven aims to enroll at least 5,000 participants to examine relationships between fertility tracking and pregnancy outcomes. Meanwhile, Johns Hopkins researchers are investigating whether wearable measurements can identify physiological changes associated with rehospitalization following acute kidney injury.

The company reports that Oura Ring has featured in more than 200 peer-reviewed publications covering cardiovascular, metabolic, reproductive, and mental health.

Separately, Mount Sinai Doctors–Concierge Care is integrating Oura Ring 5 data into its Healthspan Membership programme to provide clinicians with additional biometric information between appointments.

ŌURA is also developing clinician education initiatives and collaborating with the American Medical Student Association to support understanding of wearable health data.

Together, these activities reflect ŌURA's efforts to establish clinical evidence supporting continuous physiological monitoring, although Oura Ring remains a non-medical device and is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions.
