Walgreens, RxSense partner to give consumers prescription drug discounts

Walgreens has joined forces with RxSense, a medication access and transparency technology firm, to introduce a new digital marketplace called Rx Savings Finder. This platform enables consumers to economise on medications by comparing prices through free third-party discount prescription cards.

Leveraging RxSense's Software as a Service (SaaS) platform, Walgreens will provide its customers with a suite of services, including analytics, real-time pricing automation, and prescription savings program adjudication. The Rx Savings Finder tool will be offered to Walgreens' customers without any subscription fees, allowing users to access low-cost coupons on their mobile or desktop, which can be received via text or email. These coupons can be used in conjunction with or applied to prescription drug insurance.

Rick Bates, the founder and CEO of RxSense, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasising the focus on delivering technology solutions that offer price transparency and lower drug costs to partners and consumers. The initiative aims to empower millions of Walgreens customers with access to larger discounts on their medications. Notably, this move aligns with a broader trend in the healthcare industry toward enhancing affordability and accessibility of prescription medications.

In 2018, Walgreens initiated the 365 Get Healthy Here program, providing select prescription medications to its team members and their spouses or domestic partners with a $0 copay. The company also offers a Prescription Savings Club, allowing customers paying cash for generic medicines to access discounted medications. Other players in the discounted prescription medication space include Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company and Amazon, the latter launching the RxPass generic medication subscription service for Prime members in January, offering common drugs for a flat fee of $5 per month.
