Walmart and MISTR Launch Free At-Home HIV Testing Pilot in Georgia

Retail giant Walmart has partnered with telemedicine provider MISTR to launch a pilot program offering free at-home HIV testing kits at seven Walmart stores in Georgia. The initiative provides customers with kits that require a finger prick, complete with step-by-step instructions and an instructional video to ensure accurate testing. Around 3,000 kits will be available at each location, with the pilot lasting until supplies run out. MISTR aims to offer these free kits indefinitely if there is sustained demand, allowing individuals to test in the privacy and comfort of their own homes.

In addition to the testing kits, MISTR will provide access to free treatment and follow-up care through its telehealth platform for those who test positive. This comprehensive approach aims to address the HIV epidemic by facilitating early detection and immediate access to care. Tristan Schukraft, founder and CEO of MISTR, emphasized the importance of making testing accessible, particularly in rural areas where reaching a clinic can be challenging. Walmart's extensive presence in these areas makes it an ideal partner for this initiative.

Georgia, which has one of the highest rates of new HIV transmissions in the U.S., stands to benefit significantly from this program. The CDC recommends routine HIV testing for everyone aged 13 to 64 and annual testing for those at higher risk. Currently, an estimated 13% of the 2 million people with HIV in the U.S. are unaware of their status, contributing to nearly 40% of new transmissions. Increasing awareness and access to testing can help those who are positive engage in treatment, improving health outcomes and reducing transmission rates.
