The prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, is rapidly rising. The number of dementia cases is projected to rise from 13.5 million in 2000 to 21.2 million in 2025 and to 36.7 million in 2050. Death from Alzheimer’s is now on par with stroke, which is currently the third leading cause of death worldwide. Neurodegenerative disorders may be the biggest health threat and mystery of our lifetime. We can’t quite unravel the reason behind the growing case numbers. We’re struggling to find an effective treatment to reverse disease progression. We still know very little about the blood-brain barrier. But we are inching closer than ever before. By prioritizing prevention, early detection, and seamless integration of cutting-edge research into routine care, we can rewrite the narrative and offer hope to countless individuals and their families affected by these challenging conditions.
