Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) has announced an expanded collaboration with Nvidia aimed at significantly increasing its artificial intelligence capabilities for pharmaceutical research and development. The company said it intends to deploy an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD enabled with AI DGX Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, describing the installation as the most powerful and energy-efficient single-owned Nvidia infrastructure in the life sciences sector.
The latest agreement builds on a collaboration that began three years ago when BMS first implemented NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD systems to support research activities. The expanded infrastructure forms part of the company’s broader AI strategy, which also includes recent collaborations with Anthropic to support research and development and Microsoft to accelerate lung cancer diagnosis.
“BMS has made a deliberate bet on AI, and we are beginning to see it pay off in our pipeline and operations,” said Greg Meyers, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Bristol Myers Squibb.
According to the company, the enhanced computing platform is intended to advance its vision of hybrid intelligence, where AI systems and researchers work together throughout scientific discovery. BMS believes this approach will enable scientists to devote more time to complex scientific decisions while reducing manual and repetitive tasks.
Chief Research Officer Robert Plenge explained the intended impact of the initiative, saying, “The goal isn't speed for its own sake; it's raising the probability that each program we advance is the right one.” He added that the infrastructure is designed to allow scientists to “spend less time on manual work and more time on the questions that require human judgment.”
A company spokesperson said these investments represent complementary elements of a wider AI strategy supporting medicine discovery and development across multiple therapeutic areas.
The announcement reflects a broader trend across the pharmaceutical industry as companies continue investing in advanced AI infrastructure. Nvidia has recently expanded partnerships with several major healthcare organizations, including Eli Lilly, while Roche has introduced a hybrid-cloud AI factory for therapeutics and diagnostics research. Qiagen has also partnered with Nvidia to support AI-enabled drug discovery capabilities.
