GE HealthCare launches new AI suite to catch breast cancer sooner

GE Healthcare has launched the MyBreastAI suite at RSNA 2023, an initiative aimed at simplifying radiologists' workflows and improving the early detection of breast cancer. Jan Makela, CEO of imaging at GE Healthcare, highlighted the challenges radiologists face in analysing the vast amount of data present in mammogram images, often reading more than 100 images daily. MyBreastAI incorporates three AI applications developed by iCAD, a company specialising in technology for early cancer detection.

The first application, ProFound AI for DBT (digital breast tomosynthesis), is designed to assist radiologists in making rapid diagnostic decisions by offering insights into case scores, certainty levels related to malignant tissue densities, and calcifications. This tool seeks to reduce burnout by expediting image comprehension and aiding radiologists in prioritising their caseloads. Additionally, MyBreastAI features iCAD's SecondLook for 2D Mammography, an AI application that flags regions of interest on mammograms, ensuring radiologists are alerted to critical details after their initial reading.

The third AI solution within MyBreastAI is PowerLook Density Assessment, which focuses on standardising breast density assessment and reporting. This application aims to minimise variability among multiple radiologists, establishing a more objective and reproducible metric to facilitate personalised screening recommendations.

GE Healthcare's strategic integration of these AI applications into the MyBreastAI suite addresses the need for efficiency in radiologists' workflows, aiming to reduce burnout by minimising unnecessary clicks and streamlining diagnostic processes. The suite will initially be available to U.S. providers as part of GE Healthcare's broader mammography technology portfolio.
