Instacart Launches SNAP Eligibility Screener for Consumers and Clinicians

Instacart has introduced a new SNAP eligibility screener on its website for both consumers and clinicians, allowing individuals nationwide to quickly and anonymously check if they qualify for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. This tool, developed in collaboration with Advocatia Solutions, directs potentially eligible users to the relevant state resources for seamless enrollment. The initiative, part of Instacart Health, aims to improve access to nutritious food and health outcomes. Health partners, such as the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), can also use the screener in clinical settings to support nutrition-insecure patients.

NACHC president Dr. Kyu Rhee emphasized the importance of technology solutions to combat food insecurity, highlighting that over 775,000 health center patients screened for food insecurity in 2023. The new tool is designed to simplify access to life-changing resources for those in need.

Once enrolled in SNAP, users can add their SNAP card to their Instacart account, which labels eligible food items and stores. Instacart also offers discounted memberships and transparency for SNAP users. The platform currently supports over 30,000 stores and claims millions of SNAP users have used the service.

Instacart's commitment to food security extends to partnerships like its recent collaboration with Molina Healthcare, offering 600 pregnant plan members grocery stipends and Instacart+ memberships to reduce birth outcome disparities. Additionally, studies show that tailored support for online shopping, including meal planning and shopping tips, leads to increased purchases of fruits and vegetables.

Instacart first introduced online SNAP acceptance in 2020, expanding it nationwide in 2023 and reaching nearly 98% of eligible households. The company also offers SNAP recipients discounted membership plans to further support food access.
