Louisiana Department of Health Teams Up With Phenomune on Free Statewide At-Home Immune Profiling Program

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has partnered with biotechnology company Phenomune to launch a statewide preventive health initiative that will provide up to 250,000 residents with free at-home immune profiling kits. The program, backed by Governor Jeff Landry, is designed to help individuals better understand their natural susceptibility to respiratory illnesses while giving healthcare providers and public health officials new tools to support preventive care. By placing personalized health insights directly in the hands of residents, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on reactive healthcare models that often wait until symptoms appear before intervention begins.

The technology behind the program is based on research into bitter taste receptors, known as T2R receptors, which play a role not only in taste perception but also in the body’s innate immune response. Studies have shown that these receptors are involved in respiratory defense mechanisms that help the body respond to pathogens such as influenza, COVID-19 and bronchitis. Instead of requiring blood tests, genetic screening or laboratory analysis, the Phenomune test uses a series of taste strips that participants place on their tongue and evaluate through a mobile app. Based on those responses, the platform generates a personalized immune profile within minutes, classifying users according to their likely level of innate respiratory protection.

The initiative is intended to be both consumer-focused and population-focused. Individuals receive actionable information about their immune profiles, while healthcare organizations, including hospitals, nursing homes and community clinics, can use the program to support preventive care and patient outreach. The streamlined process is designed to remove barriers to participation, making immune insight more accessible across diverse populations, particularly in rural areas where healthcare access can be limited.

Beyond personal health benefits, the program also creates opportunities for broader public health planning. Aggregated and anonymized data collected through the platform can help state officials identify trends, allocate resources more effectively and better prepare for seasonal surges in respiratory illnesses. By combining at-home testing, digital health tools and population-level analytics, the partnership represents a novel approach to preventive healthcare that seeks to improve both individual outcomes and system-wide efficiency.
