ModMed Acquires Bonsai Health to Accelerate Agentic AI in Specialty Medicine

ModMed, a specialty-focused EHR and healthcare software provider backed by Clearlake Capital, has acquired Bonsai Health, an AI-driven patient engagement platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition is aimed at enhancing ModMed’s capabilities in automating patient outreach and practice growth across its network of nearly 50,000 providers.

Bonsai Health’s core technology is built around “agentic AI,” which goes beyond traditional chatbots by proactively identifying gaps in patient care. The system analyses patient histories, detects missed or overdue care opportunities, and automatically reaches out via SMS and email to re-engage patients. It can also match patients with available appointment slots and coordinate bookings without requiring staff intervention, helping practices optimise scheduling and reduce administrative workload.

These capabilities will be integrated with ModMed’s existing patient engagement platform, Klara, which focuses on staff-led communication workflows. While Klara acts as a central communication hub, Bonsai adds a layer of automation and intelligence designed to drive patient reactivation and fill provider schedules more efficiently.

By deploying Bonsai’s technology across its broad specialty network—including dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and gastroenterology—ModMed aims to scale AI-driven automation that improves both operational efficiency and patient access to care. The integration also brings experienced leadership and domain expertise, as Bonsai’s founders previously built healthcare growth platform PatientPop.
