Nabla has introduced Nabla Dictation for Mac, a medical-grade clinical dictation application designed natively for macOS that processes speech entirely on-device. The launch extends the company's voice-first AI strategy by combining clinical dictation with its existing ambient documentation capabilities, enabling clinicians to use a unified voice interface for a broader range of administrative and clinical tasks.
The new solution is intended to address work that occurs outside the patient consultation, including managing inbox messages, drafting referrals, coordinating follow-up care and completing clinical documentation. By integrating directly with Epic and maintaining compatibility with existing dictation hardware such as PowerMic and SpeechMike microphones, the platform allows health systems using Apple devices to introduce AI-enabled dictation without replacing established infrastructure or changing clinician workflows.
According to Nabla, the application is the result of more than two years of development focused on medical speech recognition. The company rebuilt its speech processing stack using Apple's native technologies, including Swift and Core ML, while optimising its models for Apple Silicon and the Apple Neural Engine. This enables voice activation, speech-to-text conversion and medical post-processing to be performed locally on supported Mac devices without sending audio to cloud-based servers.
Laurent Landowski, Chief Product Officer at Nabla, said, "For decades, clinicians have been forced to adapt their workflows to software. We believe it's time for software to adapt to clinicians. Voice is becoming the most natural interface for clinical work, but healthcare has been held back by fragmented tools and workflows that weren't designed for the AI era. Our vision is a future where clinicians can move through their entire day using a single, intelligent voice layer built around how care is actually delivered."
Commenting on the technical approach, Landowski added, "Core ML and the Apple Neural Engine made it possible for us to bring our entire speech pipeline on-device for Mac without compromising the performance clinicians expect from medical-grade dictation. That means clinicians get the speed and responsiveness they need, while keeping speech processing entirely on their device."
Nabla said 44% of its active clinician users currently work on Apple devices, with significant adoption across Epic organisations and virtual-first care providers. The company reports that its AI assistant is used by more than 100,000 clinicians across 190 health systems and provider groups, supporting documentation, coding and workflow automation before, during and after patient encounters.
