OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Clinicians, a new offering designed to provide free access to its AI platform for verified U.S. physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists. The initiative is intended to support clinical workflows by assisting with documentation, writing tasks, and medical research, with the broader objective of allowing clinicians to dedicate more time to direct patient care.
The release builds on OpenAI’s existing healthcare-focused portfolio, which includes ChatGPT for Healthcare, an enterprise-grade solution tailored for health systems, and ChatGPT for Health, a consumer-facing tool for addressing general health-related queries. Alongside the clinician-specific launch, the company has also introduced HealthBench Professional, a benchmarking application developed to evaluate performance across three primary use cases: care consultation, documentation and writing, and medical research.
To support safety and reliability, OpenAI has implemented continuous oversight of the system’s outputs. The company stated that physician advisors review responses “every few minutes,” and prior to launch, nearly 7,000 real-world clinical conversations were tested. According to OpenAI, 99.6% of these responses were rated as accurate and safe, reflecting the company’s emphasis on validation in clinical contexts.
The decision to offer ChatGPT for Clinicians at no cost aligns with OpenAI’s stated mission to broaden access to artificial intelligence. The company noted that “improving human health will be one of the defining impacts of AI,” while also emphasizing that achieving this outcome will depend on collaboration across stakeholders, including clinicians, health systems, patients, regulators, and technology providers.
