Patient21, a German startup that combines a digital healthcare platform with physical clinics, has successfully raised €100 million ($108 million) in a Series C funding round led by Israeli venture capital firm Pitango. The funding includes a combination of equity and debt.
Founded in Berlin in 2019, Patient21 offers a comprehensive platform that covers various aspects of the patient journey, including online bookings, digital case histories, check-ins, billing, insurance, and more. Unlike some telemedicine platforms, Patient21's focus is not on remote healthcare services. Instead, the company has developed proprietary software to manage patients and directs them to its 50-plus outpatient clinics located across Germany.
Currently, Patient21 primarily focuses on dentistry, with more than 80% of its clinics specialising in oral health. The remaining clinics are divided between gynaecology and general practitioner practices. According to Patient21 co-founder and CEO Chris Muhr, dentistry requires in-person consultations for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment, given the need for visual inspection, diagnostic tools like x-rays, and prompt response to emergencies.
The company handles over 300,000 patient visits annually and has plans to expand into other areas of healthcare in the future. At that point, Patient21 may consider incorporating virtual healthcare options and telehealth solutions into its offerings.
Patient21's software encompasses more than just the patient-facing app; it also includes applications for doctors and a clinic management system. The company aims to support healthcare professionals by streamlining administrative tasks, freeing up their time to focus on delivering quality patient care.
As the healthcare industry faces challenges such as staff shortages and increasing chronic illnesses, Patient21 seeks to optimise the use of healthcare professionals' time and provide efficient support for local clinics. The startup's long-term goal is to ensure that healthcare professionals can dedicate their expertise to patient care while benefiting from the capabilities of their clinic-facing software.
