Perplexity has announced a strategic partnership with VisualDx to integrate clinician-validated medical imagery into its AI-powered health responses, advancing how users interpret and verify medical information. The collaboration introduces a “visual intelligence layer” designed to complement text-based outputs, particularly for conditions that rely heavily on visual pattern recognition such as dermatological and infectious diseases.
VisualDx, a clinical decision support system used by more than half of U.S. medical schools and over 2,300 hospitals and clinics, joins Perplexity’s Premium Health Sources. This curated group already includes organizations such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The BMJ, and the American Heart Association. Through this integration, users querying symptoms or conditions can now access a combination of AI-generated summaries and clinician-reviewed imagery grounded in real-world diagnostic practice.
The partnership addresses a long-standing limitation in digital health tools, where text alone often lacks the nuance required to accurately convey visually diagnosable conditions. By embedding high-quality images directly into responses, Perplexity enables users and clinicians to better align abstract descriptions with observable clinical presentations.
A central component of the collaboration is its focus on representation and medical equity. VisualDx’s database includes images across a wide spectrum of skin tones, body locations, and disease stages. This allows users to compare how conditions manifest differently across populations, supporting more inclusive and accurate diagnostic exploration.
In addition to viewing images, users can:
Compare visually similar conditions to assess diagnostic differences
Navigate to deeper clinical insights within VisualDx, including testing and treatment considerations
Access peer-reviewed sources alongside AI-generated answers with transparent citations
The integration is available at no additional cost to Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers across its platform, including its AI answer engine and Perplexity Computer.
This collaboration reflects a broader shift in AI-enabled healthcare toward transparency and verifiability. By combining trusted clinical data with advanced AI interfaces, Perplexity is positioning its platform as both an informational resource and a decision-support tool that augments, rather than replaces, medical expertise.
