Samsung Launches FDA-Cleared Smart Ring for Sleep Apnea Detection

Samsung has announced that its FDA-cleared Sleep Apnea Feature will be available on the Galaxy Ring this fall, making it the first over-the-counter smart ring authorized by the agency to assess a user's risk of obstructive sleep apnea. The new capability expands Samsung's wearable health portfolio beyond general wellness tracking, bringing regulated sleep apnea risk assessment to a ring form factor and offering users another option for identifying potential signs of the common but often undiagnosed sleep disorder.

The feature uses an AI algorithm to analyze breathing disruptions recorded while the user sleeps over two nights within a 10-day period. Based on these measurements, the system categorizes sleep apnea risk into three levels and is intended to identify signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults who have not previously received a diagnosis. Samsung emphasizes that the feature is designed as a screening tool and does not replace evaluation, diagnosis or treatment by a healthcare professional.

The FDA determined the updated feature to be substantially equivalent to an existing legally marketed device following Samsung's 510(k) submission earlier this year. The approval builds on the company's earlier FDA authorization for the Galaxy Watch sleep apnea feature, which analyzes blood oxygen and movement data collected during sleep. By extending the capability to the Galaxy Ring, Samsung is broadening access to sleep health monitoring through a smaller, always-wearable device that also tracks metrics such as heart rate, activity, skin temperature and sleep quality.

The launch reflects growing momentum among consumer technology companies to introduce FDA-cleared health features that move beyond fitness tracking into regulated medical applications. Apple previously received FDA clearance for a sleep apnea feature on the Apple Watch, while other smart ring manufacturers have secured regulatory clearances for different health monitoring functions. Samsung's latest announcement further strengthens the role of wearable devices as tools for early risk detection and ongoing health monitoring outside traditional clinical settings.
