smartpatient and Novo Nordisk Expand Digital Patient Support for Type 2 Diabetes in Germany

smartpatient and Novo Nordisk have launched a new digital support programme for people living with Type 2 diabetes in Germany, extending their existing direct-to-patient (DTP) collaboration beyond obesity care into another major metabolic disease area. The initiative establishes a shared digital infrastructure designed to provide continuous support throughout the patient treatment journey.

The programme is delivered through MyTherapy, smartpatient's medication management platform, which has more than 12 million users worldwide. It is intended to support patients from treatment initiation through long-term disease management by providing personalised onboarding, treatment guidance, educational resources, refill and appointment reminders, symptom and health tracking, and behaviour-based engagement tools.

The collaboration is built on the premise that successful long-term management of metabolic diseases depends not only on access to treatment, but also on the support patients receive between clinical appointments. The companies aim to help individuals remain engaged with therapy during key stages such as treatment initiation, dose adjustments and ongoing disease management.

"Long-term Type 2 diabetes management depends on many factors. Together with smartpatient, we aim to create an integrated support experience that accompanies patients through different stages of their treatment journey alongside the care provided by their healthcare professionals and helps them manage therapy with greater confidence and continuity over the long term," said Ilka Hirschner, Senior Director, Diabetes Commercial & Brand Marketing at Novo Nordisk.

Ira von Arnim, Chief Commercial Officer at smartpatient, said, "At smartpatient, we believe the next generation of chronic disease care will be defined by how consistently patients are supported between clinical interactions, because this is where long-term treatment behaviors are formed. Expanding our collaboration with Novo Nordisk into Type 2 diabetes is a natural next step on that journey. Connected direct-to-patient ecosystems do more than support medication adherence. They help people navigate treatment successfully, stay engaged over the long term, and build the confidence to manage their health independently."

The companies stated that the expanded programme is intended to make continuous patient support an integral component of long-term metabolic disease management, complementing care delivered by healthcare professionals and supporting patients throughout their treatment journey.
