Sword Health has partnered with Portugal’s National Health Service (SNS) to bring its AI-powered musculoskeletal care platform into the country’s public healthcare system. Under the agreement, physicians will be able to prescribe Sword’s remote physiotherapy program for patients with conditions such as lower back pain, shoulder injuries, knee pain, sprains and muscle strains. The initiative is intended to expand access to rehabilitation services by allowing patients to receive treatment from home while remaining connected to clinical care teams.
The platform combines AI-driven motion analysis with oversight from physiatrists and physiotherapists, who evaluate patients, supervise treatment plans and make adjustments when needed. During therapy sessions, the system analyzes patient movements in real time and provides immediate feedback to improve exercise technique and adherence. Patients prescribed the program will receive the necessary equipment at home, and the service will be provided at no cost through Portugal’s public health system following a physician referral.
Portuguese health officials expect the program to significantly reduce waiting times for physiotherapy while lowering the overall cost of care compared with traditional rehabilitation models. The partnership also represents another step in Sword Health’s international expansion beyond digital physical therapy, following recent government collaborations and the introduction of additional AI-powered healthcare services. More broadly, the agreement highlights how national health systems are increasingly adopting AI-enabled digital care platforms to improve access, efficiency and patient outcomes.
