Abridge announced that UI Health, the academic health enterprise of the University of Illinois Chicago, will deploy its enterprise-grade AI platform across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care settings. Serving a linguistically diverse population of 1.4 million patients each year, UI Health will leverage Abridge’s automatic speech recognition technology, which supports bilingual clinicians who communicate in languages such as Spanish, Arabic, Polish, and Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese.
The AI-powered documentation platform aims to enhance both clinician efficiency and patient experience by reducing administrative workload and improving communication. Dr. David Chestek, Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and Chief Medical Information Officer at UI Health, said the institution’s goal is to adopt technologies that relieve documentation burdens while strengthening relationships with its diverse patient community.
During an earlier pilot, UI Health recorded a six-point improvement in Press Ganey scores—rising from 91% to 97%—on the measure assessing whether providers “explained in a way you understand.” Abridge’s integration with Epic Systems allows seamless scaling across departments, ensuring compliant, consistent use of AI-driven documentation to support efficient workflows and broader systemwide adoption.
